What Is the ACL?

The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is one of the major ligaments in your knee. It connects the thighbone (femur) to the shinbone (tibia) and helps stabilise the joint—especially during twisting or sudden movements.

ACL Reconstruction Surgery

If your ACL is torn and non-surgical options (like physiotherapy or bracing) aren’t enough, ACL reconstruction is usually recommended.

What to Expect:

Graft selection: Your surgeon will use a tendon graft, often from your own body (e.g. hamstring or patellar tendon) or a donor.
Minimally invasive keyhole surgery: The damaged ACL is removed and replaced with the graft, using small incisions and a camera-guided approach.
Day surgery: Most procedures are performed as a day case, under general or spinal anaesthetic.

ACL Revision Surgery

If you’ve already had an ACL reconstruction but continue to experience instability, pain, or graft failure, revision surgery may be necessary.
