Types of ECG Tests Offered
At The New Foscote Hospital, we provide several types of ECG tests depending on your clinical needs:
Standard (Resting) ECG
This is the most common type, performed while you are lying down. It typically takes 5–10 minutes and provides a snapshot of your heart’s rhythm and electrical activity at rest.
24-Hour Holter Monitor
This portable ECG device is worn over 24 hours (or longer) to continuously record your heart rhythm during normal daily activities. It is especially useful for detecting intermittent arrhythmias.
Exercise ECG (Stress Test)
This test monitors how your heart responds to physical exertion, usually performed on a treadmill or stationary bike. It is often used to investigate chest pain or suspected coronary artery disease.
What Happens During an ECG Test?
- Preparation: You’ll be asked to remove your top clothing so that electrodes can be placed on your chest. In some cases, small areas may be shaved to ensure good contact.
- Testing: The electrodes are connected to an ECG machine, and you’ll be asked to lie still while the test is carried out.
- Monitoring: For Holter or stress ECGs, you may be monitored over a longer period or during controlled exercise.
- Completion: The test is painless and non-invasive, and you can usually resume normal activities immediately after.
Understanding Your Results
Once the test is complete, the results are reviewed by one of our experienced cardiologists or clinicians. The ECG can help detect:
- Irregular heart rhythms (arrhythmias)
- Signs of a past or current heart attack
- Coronary artery disease
- Structural abnormalities in the heart
- Enlargement of heart chambers
If any concerns are identified, your doctor may recommend further investigations or treatments, including echocardiograms, blood tests, or referral to a cardiologist.
How to pay
You can self fund treatment, or pay through your medical insurance:
For those with an insurance policy which covers most medical conditions (many do).
For people choosing to fund their own diagnosis and treatment.
