Mr Kumar qualified in medicine from Ranchi Universitity in India in 1999. His specialist training took place in the UK, at King’s College Hospital, London and Wrightington Hospital, centres of excellence for orthopaedic surgery.
Admittance to the GMC’s Specialist Register for Trauma and Orthopaedic surgery followed in 2018. Mr Kumar taking up consultancy posts in Wye Valley, Buckinghamshire and at Cambridge University Hospitals.
Developing additional techniques to support his patients is important to Mr Kumar. This has included a fellowship at the Australian Institute of Robotic Orthopaedics in Perth, part of his focus on minimally invasive surgery.
An approach which ties in with Mr Kumar’s strong belief in patient safety, team working and communications skills, to contribute to the best possible outcome.
His clinical practice covers a complete range of foot and ankle surgery, from complex trauma, to treating arthritis, or correcting deformity. Techniques he employs include arthroscopy and arthroplasty, to help restore movement.
Seeing his patients able to move freely again and return to a normal life is Mr Kumar’s greatest wish, which he sees as the true purpose of his skills.
Research & Teaching
Mr Kumar has a strong interest in medical education and surgical training. He sits on the faculty for Cambridge FRCS Orth Basic Science Revision Course and is a GMC named Clinical Supervisor for Higher Orthopaedic Surgical Training.
His work as a certified appraiser of consultants, or doctors and a reviewer for clinical commissioning groups has enhanced their performance. He is a clinical leader for the British Orthopaedic Association and a Senior Honorary Associate Lecturer at Edge Hill University.
Research projects Mr Kumar has been involved in include the acute management of ankle fractures, diabetes & orthopaedic surgery, the treatment of intractable plantar fasciitis and the role of platelet derived biologics in wound healing.
Along with serving as a peer reviewer for established journals, Mr Kumar has authored and contributed to a number of publications in the field of orthopaedics.
