Mr Symons qualified from the University of Liverpool in 2003, with a medical degree and an MSc in Physiology. Along with wider medical and surgical training in London, he then obtained a PhD at Imperial College London.
Specialist training in laparoscopic surgery followed, at the Royal London and Royal Free Hospitals. Mr Symons then undertook a fellowship at the Peritoneal Malignancy Institute, providing extensive experience in the management of tumours and colorectal cancer.
He was added to the GMC’s specialist register in 2018. Consultancy posts followed, incuding as clinical lead for a colorectal robotic surgery service, an indication of the minimally invasive treatment Mr Symons can offer.
He has a particular interest in locally advanced, or recurrent colon and rectal cancer. Other conditions he treats include pilonidal sinus, haemorrhoids and diverticular disease, along with carrying out endoscopic cancer checks.
Mr Symons’s support is welcomed by patients, for the medical insight he provides and the caring way in which he approaches every case.
Research & Teaching
Surgical research has been part of Mr Symons life for many years, including a number of published papers. He served as Chair of the London Surgical Research Group and has given lectures at leading bodies, including the Royal Society of Medicine.
Mr Symons authored the Royal College of Surgeons of England’s guidelines for the management of high risk surgical patients. He teaches the Advanced Trauma Life Support course in Oxford and is an educational supervisor for surgical trainees.
