Mr Sgromo qualified in medicine from The University Magna Graecia, Catanzaro, Italy, in 1998. He then undertook surgical training in Italy, along with time in The Netherlands, in Scotland and at St Richards Hospital, Chichester.
His work in the UK focused on upper gastrointestinal tract and bariatric surgery. Areas he continues to specialise in, since being added to the GMC’s Specialist Register for General Surgery in 2006.
Mr Sgromo is now lead consultant bariatric surgeon at Oxford University Hospitals. He has helped to take forward laparoscopic gastric bypass (roo-en-wy) surgery, together with gastric band, or ballon insertion, alternative approaches to weight loss.
His skilled support for patients assists with other conditions, such as oesophago-gastric cancer, or unwanted gallstones. Recovery from hernia is an important part of Mr Sgromo’s work, including hiatus, inguinal, umbilical and incisional hernia.
Mr Sgromo’s focus on minimalist approaches to complex surgery is of benefit in many conditions. As is his wish to ensure that patients receive the finest, up to date care.

Research projects Mr Sgromo has been directly involved in relate to, resection of cancer of the oesophagus & stomach, obesity & bariatric surgery and the resolution of diabetes, or liver disease following bariatric surgery.
He has been responsible for training other UK surgeons on laparoscopic techniques. His operations have been shown on websurg.com, an international website dedicated to improving minimally invasive surgery.
