Dr Wedatilake qualified in medicine in 2004. Additional general training followed, although he took an immediate interest in sports medicine and went on to complete a master’s degree in musculoskeletal ultrasound.
After entering the GMC’s specialist register in 2012, Dr Wedatilake took up consultant posts in Leicester and Oxford. He has also worked in a number of respected sports and musculoskeletal medicine clinics.
Being recruited as Southampton Football Club’s lead doctor brought a pitch side and clinical focus. He remains a specialist medical consultant to the club..
Dr Wedatilake’s extensive experience in managing sports related injuries is valuable to their players and to all his patients. He prides himself in providing them with professional, personalised care, making sure they feel at ease to discuss their concerns.
The relationship between exercise and health is vital to all of us and Dr Wedatilake’s skills help us to maintain both elements.
Research & Teaching
Dr Wedatilake is a member of the England and Wales Cricket Board’s (ECB) medical panel and lead physician for the England Women’s Cricket Programme. He continues research through the ECB and Nottingham University, into athletes hip, or groin pain and muscle injuries.
His work for the English Institution of Sport has included assessing Olympic, or Paralympic athletes and being the basketball venue lead doctor at the 2012 Olympics.
